One useful tool for the blind is the Braille label maker. This tool makes it so that you can create labels for buttons or boxes to identify at a later time. This tool is a great way to adapt things in your space when you cannot see.
To use the braille label maker, you must first load it with label tape. Open the plastic tab on the handel and put the round part of the tape inside. You will then feed the tape into a slot closest to the dial with braille on it. After the tape is loaded, close the flap and you can begin creating your first label.
Now that the label maker is loaded, start by clicking the lever on the bottom three times. When you do this, do not squeeze hard but, do so with light pressure. Now you can begin inputing what you wish the label to read.
To write the label on the tape, twist the large circle until the letter you desire is at the bottom. It should also line up with a small rectangle you feel at the top of the handle. Now that the letter is in the right area, you will now squeeze it with a lot of pressure. The first letter is imprinted on the tape.
In some cases, you may actually want to put a space between words. To do this, squeeze the lever like in the steps above but do not squeeze very hard. You will hear the label maker click but, a letter will not have been imprinted on the tape.
Now that you are familiar with writing the labels, you now need to be able to cut the label from the maker. To do this, twist the large knob until the small rectangle to the left of the letter a is on the rectange above the handle. You will then squeeze the handle with quite a bit of force and sometimes you will need to pull the tape a little to get it out.
After the label is seperated from the maker, you need to peel it off. The label maker creates a little tab to peel away during the cutting process so, simply pull this. You may then place the label on anything you need to have labeled such as buttons or perhaps even things like folders.
Tools like the label maker really make it so that blind people can create systems for their enviroment. A great tool like this is rather helpful when you need to know what things are by touch , rather than memory alone.
