When learning to use the long white cane, there are two ways to swing it. Both methods have advantages and disadvantages to consider. After choosing the right way of swinging for the user, one will travel and get the most information.
#Constant Contact. The first method to consider is called constant contact. To use this method, swing the cane from one side to the other. When you do so, do not raise the cane off of the ground at all. The tip of the cane will drag, causing you to feel everything from left to right.
##Two-Touch. If you desire to move faster and do not care for as much detail, use what is known as two-touch. Two-touch is when you will swing the cane from side to side as mentrioned above but, the tip will only touch the ground on the far left and right. Keep in mind that when you do so, do not lift the tip higher than about half and inch from the ground. This will make it so there is zero drag but, it will catch any little bumps.
After choosing the right method for you, information from the cane will be very clear. This will make it so you will have no question of if the path is safe to walk on or not. Knowing your preference will make it so you can get the most out of using the cane.
