Creating A Braille Wallet

One of the core skills to learn if you are blind, is how to fold your cash. This is done so you can identify it later while paying for things. After years of doing this myself, I created an alternative that makes it so Folding is not needed to identify cash nor cards.

I have created what I call “The Braille Wallet.” This is created with a divider for every different kind of bill and card that I have. Further, every slot has a Braille label so I can identify it.

To create this wallet, start by getting 3 papers and a dollar bill that is unfolded. You will start by folding all papers in half to make the bottom and top touch. If this seems too tall, use scissors to cut about an inch off.

Once these papers are cut, you now need to join them together. lay them on top of each other and then fold the left and right sides towards each other. Keep in mind when doing this, it should only be about half an inch in so ensure that the bills can slide in and out without difficulty. After the sides are folded, tape the sides down so they will not come apart.

Now that the main body of the wallet is made, it is time to create the card pockets. To do this, take one of your cards and fold a little paper around it so that the bottom half of the card is covered. You will do this 3 times. When you open your wallet, you will notice that there are 3 halves so, this is where you will tape the card pockets that you just made.

Now that all of the pockets are made, it is time to use Braille to label them. Take a small index card and cut it in half. Once this is done, you will take these halves and fold them in half to cover the bottom half of the card. Fold the very edges of the left and right side in and apply tape so they will stay closed on the left and right.

Now that you have created the body of the wallet, it is time to add Braille to the money slots inside. do this by taking an index card and cutting it in half. You will then fold what you are left with in half again and braille the numbers of the dollar on each one. The first will have 1, the second will have 5, the third 10, the fourth, 20, the fifth will have 50, and the sixth will be 100. Use tape to apply these to the inside of these pockets but, make sure they are upside down so you can reach your finger qithin to read it.

Now that the sections for cash are made, you can create pockets for your cards. If you feel the inside of the wallet on the front, you will notice that there are 3 folds. This is where the card slots will be placed.

Start by getting smaller paper like index cards. You will then fold these 3 cards around the bottom half of your card. Make sure that the top half is sticking out so you can easily pull it in and out. Once this pocket has been tapped up around the back, tape one on the inner left side, one on the middele, and one on the right. To conclude the card slots, create labels for each one. You will take half an index card and fold it in half. Then Braille in the biddle what card it will belong to. In mine, I have one labeled ID, one debit, and the last is signature guide. You can conclude creating these card pockets by taping them on the inner left, middle, and right sides so they are easy to feel and read when you open the wallet.

This method is a great tool because I do not have to spend time folding and unfolding cash. Further, paying at a register is faster too because, they do not have to unfold it either. The final note I would like to add is that when someone hands me a bill and says, “Here is a 20 friend.” I don’t have to pause and fold it but can just put it within my wallet promptly.
