Choosing The Length Of Your Cane

One of the most important parts about the long white cane is the length you choose. Different lengths can give the user more or less information. Knowing how the different measurments can effect your travel will help you figure out what length is best for you.

One thing to know about all canes, is that there is a standard advisory for your cane’s length. The shortest you would want it to be is at the middle of your chest. If it is any shorter than your chest, you will likely miss important information.

The first cane I would like to discuss is the length that comes to your chest. This is very easy to swing and will lekely never tire your wrist. The only thing to keep in mind is that it will not give you as much warning because it is only so long.

The longer cane that comes up to your nose will have so much more time for feedback. You will easily be able to detect things that are at least 4 feet away from you. This cane is safer but, it can seem more clumsy because it sticks out so far.

With both of these lengths in mind, you can now choose what you desire. Do you prefer to get more information or move with less difficulty. Once you have found the right length, this can maximize your ability to figure out where to walk and where not to.
