Trash Managment

One important routine that we all have is taking out the trash. As a blind person, it is important to have a set system for this. Knowing when your trash is full and where to go will make a chore like this easy to adapt to.

To know when your trash is full, there is a good way to check via feel without getting your hands messy. Every time you put something new in it, do not just drop it. Rather, push down on it a little. From this, you shall know the level of trash you have.

When you need to take the trash out, there is also a set system needed for this. The large bin that is kept outside should be kept somewhere near your house. A great suggestion for this is to keep it at one corner of your house so that you can use your cane to shoreline the wall to find it.

When the bin outside gets full, it is time to take it to the side of the road. You will simply do this by following the driveway with your cane until you get to the road. Make sure you leave it visible to the garbage truck driveer but do not put it in the road at all.

After a day or two, you may go back to the end of the driveway to get your trash bin. Somehting to know is that the garbage company is not aware that you are blind. Ergo, when you are at the end of your driveway, do not expect it to be in the exact same place. For this you can use what is called the 3 point touch.

Swing the cane far to your left and tap the cane against the ground. Now swing it to the middle and touch down. Lastly, swing it to the far right and touch down a 3rd time. If you still haven’t found it yet, repeat this process after moving over a little.

Once you’ve found the trashcan, you may return it to it’s original location. After this, you have successfully managed your trash even though you cannot see. Even little things like this play a large role in living an independent life with no vision.
