One of the most important skills to learn as a blind person is how to clean, for it is all too easy to end up living in a dirty space due to our lack of vision. Being disciplined about cleaning removes the dependence that one may have on the sighted for knowing when an area is overly messy, and by learning certain techniques one can keep a clean enviroment without relying on sight.
Before you focus on technique, you should decide how often to clean up. A great way to keep things clean is by dedicating a little time each day to it. Many people may feel that by doing it this way their life will become all about cleaning, but the truth is that when one puts it off the task becomes much bigger and can often seem overwhelming. So do yourself a favour and learn to be strict about keeping to a schedule now, and this discipline will end up paying dividends in the future.
One of the most important techniques is the grid method, which helps us with the many aspects of cleaning that require us to keep track of space. For instance, when it comes to sweeping or vacuuming, we need to cover the whole floor without missing spots. Likewise, wiping a desk or dusting a shelf have the same requirement. To use the grid method you start at a corner and proceed in a straight line to the other end. Then move over slightly and return in a straight line back to the side you started at. Thus you can cover the whole area, and if you are careful you won’t miss any spots in the middle.
Another valuable technique is to have a good system of categorization. In order to be able to find things it is best to categorize items by type. The specifics should be decided based on individual preferences, but essentialy a combination of boxes, bags, and folders are used, depending on what the items are that one is working with. A good system of categorization is essential for the blind to maintain a well organized home, and it cannot be overemphasized.
