Identifying Cash Blind

One important skill to learn as a blind person is how to identify cash. Once money has been identified, there is a technique used to know what it is later. With the right method, cash can be identified by the blind independantly.

When you recieve new cash, the first thing to do is set it aside. Never place it in your wallet because this will get mixed up with what you already have. Later, you will use an app to know what kind of dollar you have.

Once you have a moment to yourself, open the app known as Seeing AI on your phone. You will then swipe your finger to the right until you hear it say channel. Then swipe upwards until it says currency. After this option is selected, hold the dollar in front of the camera. The amount you are holding will be read to you so that you can use a folding technique to identify it later.

When you know what kind of dollar you have, folding it is done to recognize it without having to scan it again. The one dollar bill is the only that is left unfolded. The five dollar bill is folded in half so that the shorter ends touch. ten dollar bills are folded in half so that the longer ends are even. Twenty dollars are folded both horizontally and vertically. The fifty is folded in half so the short ends meet and then fold only one corner to the side, creating a triangle. The hundred dollar bil is folded like the fifty but fold both corners down on top of each other, making it look like a pentagon.

Because of this folding method, all the cash you use can be identified later when needed. Using a method like this makes transactions take much less time because you have the ability to know what you are handing over with touch. Skills like this contribute to an independent way of life.
