One of the foundational skills for the blind to learn is pouring liquids. This skill is very important because it makes it so that you can fill containers without using your fingers to know the level of liquid within. There are technological devices that can be used for this task, but when you put time into learning how to pour by sound only, you will be self sufficient.
To fill your containers with water without using devices, you will listen to the sound of the liquid as you pour. It is so important to learn how to do it this way because it will remove dependace on things outside of yourself. As you start pouring, the noise coming from the water hitting the bottom of the glass will have a lower pitch. When the beverage sounds so shallow that it may soon overflow, stop pouring your beverage.
Something to note about your attention when listening to the water, is that you need to remain focused on what the sound quality is. I have caught myself getting distracted before and even though I am good at htis method, I poured a little water on the counter.
Filling beverages using sound helps you to be self sufficient. You won’t have to ever stop what you’re doing and get other tools for a simple task. This can also change your thinking habits to be more on the subject of “What can I do about this?” Rather than, “What can help me?”
