In the blind community, a factor that commonly distinguishes the employed from the unemployed is braille literacy. Braille is a valuable skill for the blind to learn because it allows them to retain the information presented more effectivly, and their access to the texts are not dependent on modern technology.
Reading sources like audio books are great in many ways but, this will always require you to have battery power and access to internet for downloading them. Using braille enables readers access to information without technology.
When a braille book is read, more time will be spent learning it’s contents. As you listen to an audio book, there is less inclination to stop and think about what you just heard. With reading braille, information is absorbed slowly making learning permanent.
Giving the time to learn braille results in a highly valuable outcome. Both learning and pleasure reading is far more concrete and far less dependant. This skill is a powerful tool for life without vision.
