Walking Without Shorelining

One of the easiest ways to walk in a straight line as a blind person is called shorelining. However, this makes it to where you can only follow things like walls or edges of things. With the correct walking method, you can move without relying on outside surfaces.

The first place to start is to do what is called squaring off. You will place your back to a wall or perhaps line your heels up with an edge. This will make it so that you know you are pointing straight away from your start without any crooked angles.

Now that you know you are going to go straight, you can start walking. When you do this, keep a good speed. You don’t need to rush but do not slow down. If you slow down, this leaves more room for you to drift off course.

As you walk forward, keep a few things in mind. What direction is the area you started? If you know this, you will be able to start over if needed. Lastly, have you been walking for too long? If you were only supposed to cross a parking lot and you think you’ve been walking for way too long, you know that you may need to start over.

When you have the ability to walk places as a blind person without relying on other surfaces this will make you much more self reliant. This skill will take tie to master but is worth all of the effort. It will make crossing parking lots, yards and even streets much safer.
